Welcome to 'The Lido' - a tribute to the great English outdoor pools that have sadly been disappearing in recent years.

Often to be found In a state of neglect, there is something soulful and haunting about an old lido: close your eyes and you can hear the laughter of children echoing down the years from some long lost summer of days gone by. The lido had a way of capturing emotions and holding them still in a timewarp - something you can always sense if you happen across an old pool on your travels. The backdrop to many a family's summer holiday - particularly in the 'between the wars' era - a deserted lido today has a timeless melancholy.

Find a Lido that's still operating and you'll be amazed by the atmosphere and character of the place. Most are staunchly supported by local fans and it is hoped that most of the remaining Lidos will stay open.

This website gives a taste of the Lido as it was in its 1920s/1930s heyday, some glimpses of those that have fallen into desrepair, some fascinating seawater pools, but most of all it offers you an opportunity to contribute your own lido memories. Read More...
