The Lido: Photographs and Memories
- by Hugh McClelland

I'm currently researching and writing a book which, once published, will be the ultimate history of the English Lido. A real labour of love, I'd like to include as many photos as possible, both period and recent, AND include personal anecdotes as a way of really capturing the essence of the Lidos and what they meant to the people that regularly used them.

My aim is to include reference to EVERY Lido that has ever existed in the UK and as you can appreciate, this will entail years of research. As an example, in one local town (Maidenhead, Berks) I discovered there has been at least 3 outdoor pools since the early 1900's. The exact location of these is sketchy and no accurate records exist in the library to offer any clues although there are one or two very old and badly worn photos available. Again, these do not give an indication of the precise location of the pools... So there's more research to be done: and this is just ONE town out of thousands throughout the country.

This is why I need to ask for your help. Essentially, I'd love to hear from you if you have any memories about local outdoor pools in your area - past and present. Better still, if you have photographs of your local pool I'd like to arrange to scan them for inclusion in the book. This book is a labour of love and if it is going to succeed I will certainly need help to compile the information and images required to make it happen.

So in summary, please get in touch if you have any of the following:

  • Photographs of your local outdoor pool / Lido
  • Memories and recollections of same
  • Any other Lido-related information
